TUNING FAQs

TUNING & TIMING

Question Mark Square

How often should I have my piano tuned?

It’s recommended to have your piano tuned twice a year at a minimum. Because pianos fluctuate with changes in temperature and humidity, it’s best to schedule your tuning after you turn the heat on in the fall (October/November) and after you turn the heat off in the spring (April/May).

Question Mark Square

What are the best times of year to tune?

In the fall, the cold temperatures and your furnace dry the air out, which leads the wood in your piano to shrink and makes the piano go flat (it shortens the string). Most people in northern Utah turn on the heat in October or November. In the spring, when temperatures and humidity rise again, the piano naturally absorbs the moisture in the air, which makes the wood expand and the piano goes sharp (it expands the string). Likewise, most turn the heat off in April or May.

Question Mark Square

Can I have my piano tuned and serviced at other times in the year?

Absolutely! I recommend getting the piano tuned and serviced as soon as possible so you can get back to playing your favorite tunes.

Question Mark Square

What is included in a standard tuning appointment?

The following services are included in a standard, 2-hour tuning appointment: 1. A tuning (pitch raise or fine tuning) 2. A regulation check of all piano parts (pedals, keys, action) 3. Complimentary piano cleaning (internal dusting and vacuuming)

Question Mark Square

What is the difference between a pitch raise and fine tuning?

When a piano has not been tuned regularly (every six months) or experiences major changes in humidity and temperature, it often needs a pitch raise, which is the act of raising each tuning pin several cents above the ideal pitch. As the piano adjusts to its new tension, over the course of several weeks, many pins will fall again below pitch and the piano will require a fine tuning. The fine tuning will help stabilize the instrument’s pitch. It’s recommended that
